Thor Photography presents a 11-day/10-night autumn photography workshop in New Zealand south Island.
Created for photographers who want to explore dramatic landscapes, ever-changing light, and the quiet magic of being in the field with camera in hand. The focus is on New Zealand’s incredible variety, from rugged coastlines and reflective lakes to mountain valleys, waterfalls, and hidden places where the light can transform the scene in a moment.

This immersive journey is designed for photographers who enjoy slowing down, following the weather and the light, and creating strong images in one of the world’s most inspiring and visually rich landscapes.

  • In a nutshell

    New Zealand South Island  The Ultimate 10-Day

    This itinerary follows a route from Christchurch through Methven, Twizel, Wanaka, Queenstown, Te Anau, and Milford Sound, taking in the Canterbury, Ashburton Lakes, MacKenzie, Otago & Fiordland regions with sunrise and sunset shoots planned around key South Island landscape Photography locations, including some icons & some local secrets. 

  • Getting to/from NEW ZEALAND

    You want to fly into Christchurch International Airport ( CHC )
    IWe'll conclude in Queenstown so your return flight would be from 
    Queenstown International Airport ( ZQN )

  • Physical Requirements:

    This workshop will not include any difficult hikes.
    Most locations are either very close to where we can stop or 10 to 30 min easy walk. 

     

  • Day by day plan

    Day of Arrival - 30th April 

    Arrive in Christchurch. 
    Overnight in Christchurch - Commodore Hotel. 
    Focus: Shake out the travel fatigue, relax, check all camera gear, organise cards and batteries ready for the adventure that starts tomorrow. 
    We‘ll have our welcome dinner in the evening.

    Day 1 - 1st May:

    Route: Christchurch to Methven.
    We check out of our hotel after breakfast and head to Methven where we check into our hotel and prepare for afternoon and sunset shoot which will be Lake Heron
    Overnight in Methven

    Day 2 - 2nd May:

    Methven to Twizel
    Main locations will be Lake Camp for sunrise and Tasman Lake for sunset
    Overnight in Twizel

    Day 3 - 3rd May:

    Main locations:
    Sunrise at Lake Ohu then we'll have a break in the middle of the day in Twizel.
    Evening session in the remote back country - Ahuriri Valley.
    Overnight in Twizel

    Day 4 - 4th May: 

    Sunrise shoot will be at Peter’s Lookout (early morning blue hour view of the majestic Mount Cook)
    Sunset shoot: Lake Tekapo (the famous Church of The Good Shepherd) or Lake Alexandrina based on the conditions
    Overnight: Twizel  

     

    Day 5 - 5th May:

    Main locations:
    Sunrise around Lake Poaka or Kellands Pond.
    Sunset either at Lindis Pass or Matukituki Valley

    Drive to Wanaka.
    Overnight: Wanaka

    Day 6 - 6th May:

    Sunrise shot the WORLD FAMOUS Wanaka Tree
    Sunset shoot: Glenorchy Wharf / or Glenorchy Wetlands
    Overnight: Queenstown.

    Day 7 - 7th May:

    Sunrise shoot, Moke Lake / Lake Kirkpatrick / Glenorchy Wetlands
    Sunset shoot: The jaw dropping Milford Sound
    Travel onward to Te Anau
    Overnight: Te Anau

    Day 8 - 8th May:

    Sunrise session at Lake Gunn
    Spend the day in Fiordland National Park lots of green scenes.
    Evening/ Sunset shoot: Milford region / Homer area, evening shoot in the wider Milford region depending on weather and access.
    Overnight: Te Anau

    Day 9 - 9th May:

    Our final sunrise session at Mirror Lakes or Te Anau Wharf
    We‘ll then return for breakfast and continue onward travel back to Queenstown where the workshop concludes.
    Queenstown is the end of our adventure & you’ll have your final nights accomodation covered.


    Day 10 – 10th May – Departure day:
    This will be the deparure day.

    • Daily hands on time with the instructor, who will be available to you all day long.

    • How to create compelling and enticing landscape compositions.

    • How to properly expose for an image throughout all variety of light including prime and non-prime lighting conditions.

    • How to utilize motion blur to capture dramatic seascapes and waterfall images.

    • Workflow techniques for Lightroom and Photoshop.

    • Much, much more!

  • You need to bring

    • A DSLR/mirrorless camera or equivalent

    • Filters for your camera, polarizer is a must fitler to bring.

    • A variety of lenses - From wide to telephoto (15mm-500mm)

    • A sturdy tripod

    • Multiple memory cards

    • Extra batteries

    • Laptop

    • Photoshop and Lightroom installed on your computer (at least the trial versions)

    We do not aim for a fixed itinerary apart from where we are staying. 
    Besites from tried and tested location there is so much in the area worth stopping for, we put our full trust in our local guides that know the area inside out.
     

    A packing list will be sent out prior to the workshop along with list of what is recommended to bring, gear wise.

Tuition: €8990 EUR

Deposit: €750 EUR

A €750 EUR non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your space for this workshop.

The remaining balance is due on December 30th, 2027 via banktransfer only.

If the remaining balance is not paid in full, your space will be forfeited. 
Minimum 8 participants is needed for this workshop to go ahead.
