In December 4th to 10th you can join award winning photographer Thorarinn Jonsson on this
7-day adventurous photography workshop in the captivating landscape of Madeira
Madeira is a dream destination for landscape and travel photography, with dramatic scenery packed into a compact island. Rising 2,000 meters from the Atlantic, this volcanic island features towering cliffs, deep valleys, misty forests, and ancient trees, often sitting above the clouds.
In a nutshell
Though located 500 kilometers west of Morocco, Madeira’s steep cliffs capture Atlantic moisture, creating lush, green landscapes.
Despite its small size—just 50 kilometers long and 15 km wide—Madeira offers an incredible variety of scenery.
You can shoot rugged seascapes in the morning and be on a mountaintop surrounded by rolling fog within 20 minutes. Traditional architecture adds charm and scale to the landscape, enhancing every composition.
Having explored many of the world’s most photogenic places, Madeira is definitly up there as one of my favorite, and we are excited to share this incredible island with you.
We’ve chosen December to avoid peak tourism while keeping Madeira’s excellent weather. Our workshops are designed so you can focus entirely on photography while we handle everything else.
With expert guidance, we’ll take you to the best locations in the best light, providing personalized tuition to help you refine your skills and capture unforgettable images.
Getting to Madeira
You will want to fly into Funchal (FNC).
Madeira is part of Portugal and located in the Atlantic Ocean 350 miles (565 km) off the west coast of Morocco.
Direct flights to the capitol city Funchal (FNC) are easily available across Europe and the UK. If you're coming from beyond, fly direct to Lisbon (capitol of Portugal) and get a connecting flight from there.
Physical Requirements:
This workshop is easy for anyone, most of the locations are easy to get to however some require either short hike or scrambling over rocks.
Some walking will be required, some locations along well-paved & rough trails are around 40 minutes (2km each way) with inclines of up to 200m over the duration of the trail.Day by day plan
Our days will be changeble based on the weather.
4th December is Arrival day, we have nothing planned for that day but depends on when everyone arrive we might go for sunset.
10th December is Departure day, we have nothing planned that day exempt saying goodbye and head to the airport.
Normally our days will start with early breakfast before we go for our sunrise session, or we grab a luch pack with us.
Based on how long we stay out we might go back to our hotel for lunch or if we have lunch/brunch somewhere inbetween shoots.Depending on weather conditions, we’ll typically wrap up the morning session between 10:00 and 11:00 AM.
We aim to have at least 2 or 3 crieque and editing session during the midday or just soaking up the sun before we head back out in the afternoon until sunset.
During our afternoons we plan to photograph at least one locations before we get in position for our sunset shoot.
Madeira is perfect for some astro photography so if conditions allow we plan to do one or two outings for that.
One of the best parts of staying in one place the entire time is there is more time to organise your images, charging battteries, resting and have educational and editing sessions.
We'll make our decisions on where to shoot each day based of the weather and conditions.Included in the fee
