Lofoten locations with some epic Autumnal colour.
The beautiful Lofoten archipelago look absolutely stunning in autumnal colours, plus the lakes with those towering peaks hold the possibility of reflections in Autumn. Not to mention numerous locations that are inaccessible in winter including the amazing Reinebringen and Kvalvika hike. So much to shoot including dramatic mountains, epic fjords, cute little cottages, single-trees and hopefully northern lights.
In a nutshell
This workshop is covering some of the best parts of Lofoten Island in northern Norway which is located north of the arctic cirlce, where we can experiance some magical arctic light.
This time of year we will be focusing on the stunning fall colours along with some epic seascapes and ofcourse some nothern lights.
This usually stunning area becomes even more magical and striking in the autumn with its autumnal colurs, mountain peaks, turquoise seascapes, clean beaches, dramatic fjords, and of course we will have our fingers crossed the Northern Lights.
There are no big drives on this trip so plenty of time to concentrate on your shooting.
Getting to Leknes
You will want to fly into Oslo (OSL) and connect through there to Leknes (LKN), normally with short stop in Bodo (BOO) tour begins in Leknes (arrival night included) and concludes at Leknes airport
Physical Requirements:
The majority of the workshop is easy with locations close to the car.
We have 2 hikes planned if the weather allows, one of them is to the beautiful beach of Kvalvika. The hike to Kvalvika Beach in Lofoten is a scenic, moderate-level hike rewarded with a secluded, sandy beach nestled between dramatic mountains.
The route is a 2 km one-way trail that involves walking on boardwalks, uneven rocks, and then descending a sometimes muddy path to the beach. The other hike is called Reinebringen and is a fair bit more challenging, but plenty of time will be allocated and everyone in decent shape should be able to do it.
The Reinebringen hike is a steep, physically demanding climb in Norway’s Lofoten Islands that leads to one of the most iconic views in the country. The trail consists of a stone staircase of nearly 2,000 steps, and is strenuous. While the climb is technically easy, the reward is a spectacular panorama of the village of Reine, the fjords, and jagged peaks, which is particularly stunning in great light. Both hikes are afternoon activities, and in case someone is not up for doing them, there are plenty of other things to shoot by the cabins.
Day by day plan
Day 1: Arrival Day (23rd Sept)
You'll land in Leknes where you can take a taxi to our hotel.
Leknes is a small town on the north end of the peninsula. You can fly here via a connecting flight from Oslo or else take a ferry via Bodo. The flight is really a much easier way to do it. Our first 2 nights will be spent in Leknes where we have a host of stunning Arctic beaches to visit. Rolling swells, turquoise waters, and epic foregrounds.
-Overnight in Leknes
Day 2:
We explore this part of the Lofoten Islands, Abundance of location to chose from and as always we do not have a set itinerary so we'll chose our locations based on the contitions.
-Overnight in Leknes
Day 3-7:
We'll go for sunrise before breakfast and check out. We'll now drive further south and explore thestunning parts around Reine and Hamnoy.
From Leknes, we head further down the peninsula for the next 4 nights to the town of Hamnoy. You will be based in a well-appointed converted fishing cabin with the most amazing views you could imagine. We have a mix of single occupancy and shared cabins available. Either way, you will have your own room. The scenery is literally on your doorstep and most shoots are within a few kilometres of your base. It’s quite an experience.
We do not set out a specific daily location itinerary, as we will photograph the best locations under the prevailing light conditions. As a general guide, however, we will be visiting Leknes, Hamnoy & its surrounding areas. The pictures give you a great idea of what we are aiming for.
On the last day (29th Sept) we'll conclude at the airport in Leknes (time TBD)Included in the fee

Camera gear:

For equipment, we recommend at least a DSLR. Wide, fast lenses are more popular with night and aurora.
-
We recommend an ND filter, grad filters and polariser. Sturdy tripod – think windy!
-
An expected amount of gear would fill a camera backpack.Typically we will be shooting landscapes, so a quality wide angle is important… the lens needs to be fairly fast i.e. f/2.8 if possible
-
Spare Batteries, European charger. Car charger
-
Shutter Release
-
As we will be shooting at night, it is important to have a headlamp.
Clothing:
-
The correct way to dress is to have suitable layers of clothing, so that layers can be added or removed accordingly. Icelanders dress with 3 or 4 thin layers, starting with wool and ending with Goretex (or similar).
-
You can expect temperatures between 12 c and -12 c
-
Layers of clothing, for example, thermal-shirt, fleece, jacket, long-johns, Outdoor trousers (not jeans!!), rain jacket and rain trousers.

Sturdy shoes for light hiking (waterproof is best), wool socks.
-
Hat and gloves, scarf and balaclava.
-
Spare gloves – spare shoes.
