Day 2 - 3: Sunday/Monday
The destination on this leg of the tour is the unspoiled nature of the highlands. Hrauneyjar Hotel will be our base camp for the time we spend up in the highlands. From there we will be travelling to several locations in the area, and as always, we base our decision on the weather forecast and conditions at the time.
The best known location in The Highlands is probably Landmannalaugar where we will photograph colourful rhyolite mountains. This place is like nothing else you have ever seen before. In Landmannalaugar we have the option of do several short hikes into the Grænagil Canyon (green canyon) or even hike up to Brennisteinsalda which is a Sulphur mountain / hill. Also, there are good photo opportunities right from the parking area.
This crater is also known as The Blue pool because of the colour of the water. This 0.3 square km crater was formed during an explosive eruption about 1130 years ago. The colours here are simply breathtaking, with the red iron gravel inside the crater shining against the bright green vegetation surrounding the outside.
This is the largest lake in the area covering roughly 2.2 square km. With lava fields coming at it from 3 sides, this shows off the harsh forces at work in the eruptions that have formed this landscape. We will probably visit some of these places more than once.
We'll accommodate in the highlands for two nights.
When we check out from our hotel and head to the south coast we will have chance of stopping at several locations on the way.
Day 4: Thuesday
Leaving the highlands and we head down to the south coast, locations will most likely be waterfalls, green mossy lava field, seascapes and more.
Accommodation at the south coast.
Day 5 - 6: Wednesday/Thursday
We head further east and our next two days will be at the glacier lagoon and the surrounding area.
Jökulsárlón (Glacier Lagoon) is one of Iceland's most visited places for good reason. It is a pure natural piece of constantly changing art and a spectacular sight in any weather or light.
The lagoon is situated below the largest glaciers in Europe, Vatnajökull. We never get tired of visiting this ecological phenomenon and ever-changing scene with its floating icebergs and shattered ice on the black sandy beach. We will most likely pay the famous Vestrahorn a visit while there.
Accommodation close to the Lagoon.
Day 7: Friday
This is our last day on the road. On our way back to Reykjavík we will cross the whole of the south coast and we will take advantage of good photo opportunites on the way.
We aim to be in Reykjavík in the afternoon so you will have time for checking in and get ready before we meet for farewell dinner.
